    In Kenya, four people were hacked to death and their houses torched in an attack claimed by Shabaab militants in coastal Lamu county today. Coastal police chief Larry Kieng said the attackers dragged people from their houses and killed them.

    Tamil Nadu Dhakhineshwar Suresh, seeded fifth, upset top-seed Parikshit Somani of Bengal 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to reach the boys singles final of the Adidas MCC Junior National Clay Court Tennis Championship in Chennai today. In the final tomorrow, Suresh will take on fourth-seeded Abhimanyu Vannemreddy of Delhi, who got the better of unseeded Rhythm Malhotra 7-6, 6-3.

    Indian juniors presented impressive performances in the Asian junior individual squash championship in Jordan with as many as 10 players entering the semifinals in various categories today. In the boys' section, Tushar Shahani (U-17), Neel Joshi (U-15), Yuvraj Wadhwani and Parth Ambani (both U-13) have reached the last four.

    Rohan Bopanna and his Croatian partner Ivan Dodig reached the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters after defeating Juan Sebastian Cabal and Fabio Fognini in a tight contest. The seventh seeds Bopanna and Dodig, who ended finalists at the Rogers Cup last week in Montreal, rallied to humble the Colombian-Italian combo 5-7 7-5 10-8 in a second round match.

    Rafael Nadal cruised to victory in his first match since clinching a return to world number one while Alexander Zverev's 10-match win streak was halted at the WTA and ATP Cincinnati Masters. Nadal, a 15-time Grand Slam champion who captured his 10th French Open crown in June, defeated Richard Gasquet 6-3, 6-4, improving to 15-0 in ATP matches against the Frenchman.

    Young Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen on thursday clinched the Bulgaria Open International Series title after notching up a hard-fought win over Croatia's Zvonimir Durkinjak in the men's singles final in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 16-year-old shuttler defeated second seed Zvonimir 18-21 21-12 21-17 in a 57-minute match.

    In Hockey, India finished its European tour on a high registering victory over Austria in Amstelveen last night.In its 5th and last game of the tour, India won the match by a last second goal, against the Austrians, 4-3.



  • Russian President Vladimir Putin today appointed career diplomat Nikolay Kudashev as Russia's new ambassador to India. Russian embassy in New Delhi said Kudashev, a specialist in South East Asia, is currently the Deputy Director General Secretariat of the Ministry of foreign Affairs of Russia.



  • The information and broadcasting ministry today constituted a steering committee for the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) with film director Nagesh Kukunoor and lyricist Prasoon Joshi among its members.The IFFI is proposed to be held from November 20-28 in Goa. In a statement issued late tonight, the information and broadcasting ministry said the steering committee will have 13 members, including Jahnu Barua (convener), Piyush Pandey, creative director of Ogilvy & Mather (India), and film director and producer Shoojit Sarcar.The director of NFDC is also a member of the committee.



  • The Union Minister of Finance, Derfence and Corporate Affairs, Shri Arun Jaitley, will be the Chief Guest at the National Conference on " Insolvency and Bankruptcy: Changing Paradigm" scheduled to be held at Mumbai tomorrow.Shri Jaitley will deliver the Inaugural Address on the occasion.



  • Telecom regulators of 23 countries from the Asia-Pacific will meet in Delhi on Monday to discuss challenges in framing rules for digital ecosystem and regional roaming, among others. Regulatory heads of Australia, Afghanistan, Iran, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vanuatu, Fiji and some others are slated to attend the international meet on August 21.



  • The commerce ministry today said it has started an online facility to allow faster approvals and clearances for companies looking to set up an inland container depot (ICD) or container and air freight stations. The ministry said in a statement in New Delhi today that companies can now make their application online and view its progress and update online, without a visit to any government office.



  • The external affairs ministry today said it has not received any communication from Pakistan about launch of a consultation process by it to nominate an ad-hoc judge for the Kulbhushan Jadhav case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar told reporters, replying to a question on the issue that we have not been informed officially about this process by relevant authorities.
