The United States requested a vote on a draft resolution it presented last week that would allow the joint UN-Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) panel to continue for another year on its work of identifying who is behind toxic gas attacks in Syria's six-year war.

  • Rural Development Ministry has said, more than one lakh youths were employed at job fairs held during a fortnight-long campaign across India in early October. In a statement in New Delhi yesterday, the Ministry said that during the campaign on development and cleanliness of villages, which ended on October 15, a total of 1.35 lakh youths were placed.

  • The CBI has booked the officials of Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India under Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly allowing supply of sub-standard ballast causing the "loss of crores of rupees" to the Government. According to an FIR filed by CBI in New Delhi yesterday, Project Manager Shiv Karan, Deputy Project Manager V K Mittal of DFCCI, Sikar and other accused have been booked for criminal conspiracy, cheating, and under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.



  • Sailboat INSV Tarini, with an all-women crew, today entered Fremantle Port in Australia during its maiden voyage to circumnavigate the globe. The Indian Navy said in a statement in New Delhi today that this is the first-ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew. The vessel is skippered by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi, and the crew comprises Lieutenant Commanders Pratibha Jamwal and P Swathi, and Lieutenants S Vijaya Devi, B Aishwarya and Payal Gupta. Flagged off by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on September 10, the vessel has covered 4,800 nautical miles from Goa, crossing the Equator on September 17 and the Tropic of Capricorn on October 6.The vessel would return to Goa in April, 2018..



  • Egyptian warplanes killed suspected militants and destroyed eight vehicles they were using to smuggle weapons into the country from neighbouring Libya. Army spokesman Tamer el-Rifai said in a statement in Cairo today the air force warplanes raided the border area, foiling a new infiltration attempt and destroying eight vehicles that were carrying large quantities of weapons, ammunition and explosive material.

The American message comes ahead of US President Donald Trump's maiden trip to China next month.It also comes less than a week after Secretary of State Rex Tillerson accused China on indulging in "predatory economics".
